According to Mazda USA, the SUV shown above is being marketed as the “first-ever CX-70”. However, it is important to note that it is essentially a modified version of the “second-ever CX-90”, with the third row of seats removed.
You’ll notice that they are almost identical. Both cars are constructed on the same platform and offer the same powertrain choices as well (more details on that coming up). However, the “new” CX-70 does have slightly more sporty-looking front and rear bumpers.
In terms of differences, the CX-90 can accommodate up to eight individuals with its three rows of seats, whereas the CX-70 only has two rows and a maximum capacity of five people. As a result, the CX-70 offers a spacious trunk with clever storage solutions to prevent items from moving around. Additionally, you have the option of electrically folding the rear seats, effectively transforming the vehicle into a large van with just a simple button press.
In addition, the interior of the vehicle features a fresh red leather design, which Mazda claims draws inspiration from the 100th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5. Furthermore, the inclusion of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant marks its debut in the car. These additions bring a lot of excitement to the overall experience.
In any case, the available engine options for these vehicles are driven by a 3.3-liter straight-six turbo petrol engine that is equipped with mild-hybrid assistance. This engine is available in either 276 horsepower or 335 horsepower variants. If you are looking for even more hybrid capabilities, there is also a plug-in hybrid option that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, resulting in a power output of 319 horsepower. All of these powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Was it necessary for Mazda to remove the seats from a CX-90?
