The introduction of the latest model from Renault, the Renault 5 EV, an electric hatchback aims to appeal to fans of classic Renault cars in Europe and the UK. While the design is inspired by the 1970s Renault 5, this new version incorporates modern technology and features.
A new electric vehicle, the 5, will soon be on the market as an alternative to the MG 4 and BYD Dolphin. It will come with two different battery choices, a maximum range of up to 400 km, and an advanced infotainment system that includes Google services. Sales for the 5 will start early next year, and it’s thought we’ll be able to buy one for under £25,000.
Renault 5 EV Design Differences with the 2021 Version
Nearly three years have passed since the introduction of the Renault 5 concept, and the company asserts that this new version maintains 95% of its design. The production model maintains a futuristic appearance similar to the concept. It also incorporates elements of the original 1970s model’s retro aesthetic.
One of the noticeable changes is in the front of the car, where the headlamps now have a slight bend at the bottom. The fog lamps have also been adjusted, along with the wing mirrors. The charging indicator on the hood is designed to resemble the air vent found on the classic 5 model.
The car’s production version maintains the concept’s boxy side profile and sporty stance with wheels at each corner. All models come with 18-inch wheels, but the base models have steel rims covered with hubcaps. The wheels on this car are the same as the ones seen in the concept.
When you glance at the back, the taillights feature immediately stands out as belonging to a 5 model. There were minor adjustments to the original design to improve aerodynamics and increase the car’s driving range. Additionally, the vents on the sides of the car are a clear reference to the Renault 5 GT Turbo.
Renault 5 EV Interior and Infotainment System
When you enter the space, you’ll notice a mix of modern and vintage elements. That is distinct compared to a car like the Volkswagen ID3.
The modern two-step dashboard design is complemented by denim-like coverings that add a classic touch to the interior. The seats are made from recycled plastic bottles and come in a variety of vibrant colors to enhance the overall look of the cabin.
Additional customization choices include interchangeable gear selector ends with various designs. You can swap them easily without needing tools. You also have the option to add a small wicker basket in the front passenger area for carrying your items. Yes, it’s true.
The controls are conveniently located around the driver in all cars, with each car equipped with a 10.0-inch infotainment screen. A 7.0-inch digital driver’s display is included as standard, but some models offer a larger 10.0-inch unit. The cars also come with built-in apps like Google Maps.
Renault 5 Engine Capabilities and Overall
Similar to the traditional hatchback design, the new Renault 5 is only offered with front-wheel drive. However, customers have the option to select from three different power levels.
Basic cars typically have 95 horsepower and take around 12 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60mph. While this may not be very fast, it is sufficient for everyday city driving. On the other hand, a mid-level model with 123 horsepower can complete the same acceleration in 9.0 seconds.
At the highest end of the lineup is a 150hp engine that can accelerate from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds. This is comparable to the Volkswagen ID3 S but is slower than the Mini Cooper Electric by half a second. If you’re looking for a faster acceleration similar to a hot hatch, you’ll need to wait for the release of the Alpine A290 later this year.
Battery Technology and Driving Range
When it comes to powering the electric motor, you can choose between two different battery packs. The 40kWh pack is a good option for driving in the city as it provides a range of 186 miles. Although it is not as advanced as the entry-level BYD Dolphin, this option is still suitable for drivers frequently encountering urban traffic congestion.
If you want to travel longer distances regularly, the retro Renault with a larger 52kWh battery is a good option, providing a range of 249 miles. This is comparable to the range of the Mini Cooper Electric and should be sufficient for your daily driving requirements.
Both battery choices can be charged from 15-80% within approximately 30 minutes using a DC fast charger. Additionally, they both offer a feature known as vehicle-to-load charging, allowing you to power household appliances with the car’s battery while on the go.
Renault 5 Price and Release Date
The upcoming Renault 5 EV will be available for purchase in France starting in September of this year, with a starting price of 25,000 euros. While the exact pricing for the UK market has not been confirmed, it is expected to be lower than competitors such as the MG 4 and BYD Dolphin. As for the Renault 5 release date, we expect cars to arrive in the UK in early 2025, just under a year after the 2024 Geneva Motor Show reveal.
