BMW has released more details about the manual-transmission Z4, which will be available for the 2025 model year. The manual transmission is part of a $3,500 package that BMW is codenaming “Handschalter,” which means “hand transmission” in German. We’ve added new photos of a 2025 Z4 equipped with the transmission. San Remo Green will only be available on the manual transmission version, and there’s also a BMW Individual color called Frozen Deep Green Metallic available for $2950. The manual Z4 will go on sale in March 2024.
After a long absence, the 2025 BMW Z4 introduces a manual transmission again. This addition comes a year after Toyota acknowledged public pressure and gave the GR Supra the option of a six-speed manual transmission for the 2023 model year.
When it comes to the Supra, the transmission itself is shared by both cars, but, according to BMW, each car has different settings and bushings. Another thing the Z4 shares with the Supra? The manual will only be available on the 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine variant, which BMW is calling the M40i. There’s no option for those who want to combine the basic turbo-four with three pedals.
The transmission will be included as part of a larger option package in the Z4. However, unlike other models where choosing a three-pedal setup is offered sometimes at no additional cost, BMW has decided to charge $3500 for it in the Z4. This decision stems from the assumption that customers who prefer a manual transmission also want a sportier version of the Z4.
This package includes the electronically controlled M differential found on all M40i Z4s. The steering has also been retuned to provide better feedback to the driver, while the adaptive dampers are better tuned for more aggressive driving. The manual version also gets a split wheel configuration, with 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear.
