Electric vehicles (EVs) have now become a popular method of transportation. This makes these vehicles increasingly common on roads and highways. The popularity of these type of vehicles is growing exponentially. Electric vehicles have been developed in various countries. So, how many electric cars are on the road today? Is the US the country with the most EV users? Or are there other countries that are developing this technology rapidly?
How Many Electric Cars in the US?
Experian reports that there are currently 1.7 million electric vehicles on the United States roads. To provide context, this number pales in comparison to nearly 285 million vehicles in total. Hence, it is clear that the widespread acceptance and adoption of electric cars still has a significant journey ahead.
Electric car sales are no longer concentrated in California and the Northeast. Cities like Tucson, Orlando, and Oklahoma City have experienced significant increases in popularity. Florida and Texas have reported the second and third-highest number of electric vehicle registrations in 2021.
How Many Electric Cars in the World?
International Energy Association reports that more than 26 million electric cars are being used worldwide.
Electric car sales showed different growth rates in different regions and types of powertrains, but China remains the dominant market. In 2022, China saw a 60% increase in sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) compared to 2021, reaching a total of 4.4 million, while sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) almost tripled to 1.5 million. China accounted for about 60% of all new electric car registrations worldwide. Additionally, for the first time in 2022, China had more than 50% of the global electric car population, with a total of 13.8 million vehicles on it.
In 2023, China will have about half of the total number of electric cars in the world, namely more than 13 million units.
The continuous policy support and lower retail prices have been the driving factors behind the increase in electric car sales in China. In 2022, the average price of a small electric car in China was less than $10,000, which is considerably lower than the prices of similar cars in Europe and the United States. In those regions, the average price exceeded $30,000 in the same year.
How About EVs in Europe?
In 2022, Europe maintained its position as the second-largest market for electric cars worldwide, following China. It accounted for 25% of all electric car sales and held a 30% share of the global stock. Germany emerged as the largest market in Europe, with 830,000 units sold, while the United Kingdom and France followed with 370,000 and 330,000 units respectively. Spain also saw sales surpassing 80,000 units. According to data, there are over 7 million electric cars on the roads in Europe.
